Seven Weeks to Go!

Hard to believe that after almost two years of planning our Baby Boomer Bike Ride Across America (BBBRAA) trip is just seven weeks away.  Last night we had a social get together/meeting with the Milwaukee area participants to review general information and meet everyone.  There are currently 12  from Milwaukee and 4 from Texas for a total of 16.  Of those,  13 are riding the entire cross country route and 3 are doing a segment of the trip.  In addition, various family and friends will meet us along the route to share this experience. We will be spending the weekend in Portland, OR before beginning our ride on Monday, July 1, 2013.

The organizational planning is in full swing with Nancy Notley and I coordinating the details as to lodging, transportation, meals, etc.  This is like a fun, part-time, volunteer job and luckily for me I like creating spreadsheets, because they are endless - lodging, packing lists, participants, etc. and now I've added blogging to my hours on the computer.  The other side of preparing (organizing being the first) is the outdoor training, basically putting the miles in.  For most people this has been minimal as winter lasted well into May this year and only in the last week have we seen sun and temperatures over 40.  Fortunately, being baby boomers we've ridden many thousands of miles over the years and hopefully, it's just like getting back on the bike and riding.

Id love to say I'm in the best shape of my life as I begin this journey, however that is not the case.  I have been plagued with a herniated disc for the last month or so and have drastically reduced my training to basically zero miles per week.  However, this week I've felt a little better and have started doing a few easy miles each day and still have seven weeks to improve.  The overall consensus of the group is that we will ride at a comfortable pace and stop to "smell the roses,"  so that will work for me.  After all, we do have all day, every day to ride so what's the rush to get to a motel room in the middle of nowhere.

I'm a part of this BBBRAA journey to have fun, to challenge myself, to do something different, and quite possibly to escape the routines of daily life.
